Vanaf seizoen 2025-2026 is de Duits-Japanse dirigent Jun Märkl de nieuwe chef-dirigent van het Residentie Orkest, als opvolger van Anja Bihlmaier. Zijn benoeming bezegelt de jarenlange, uitstekende samenwerking: Märkl is een veelgevraagd gastdirigent en sinds de zomer van 2021 vaste gastdirigent. Hij zal voor minimaal vier seizoenen als chef-dirigent verbonden zijn aan het orkest.

Daarnaast wordt ook de langdurige relatie tussen het Residentie Orkest en vaste gastdirigent Richard Egarr verlengd tot 2029. Het team wordt gecompleteerd met de jonge, Britse dirigent Chloe Rooke in de nieuw gecreëerde positie van emerging artist in residence voor drie seizoenen vanaf 2024. Bekend om haar uitzonderlijke talent en haar aanstekelijke enthousiasme naar zowel orkest als publiek zal de in Den Haag woonachtige Chloe Rooke betrokken zijn bij de vier pijlers van het orkest: symfonisch, educatie, talentontwikkeling en maatschappelijk.

Sven Arne Tepl, algemeen en artistiek directeur van het Residentie Orkest: “We zijn verheugd dat een van de meest ervaren dirigenten op het internationale circuit zich als chef-dirigent verbindt aan het Residentie Orkest. We kijken ernaar uit om onze langdurige relatie met Jun en Richard te continueren en verder te intensiveren, naar het begin van de vaste samenwerking met Chloe en natuurlijk het geweldige werk met Anja voor het komende anderhalf seizoen voort te zetten.”

Jun Märkl: "Na vele jaren van inspirerend musiceren met de geweldige musici van het Residentie Orkest ben ik heel enthousiast om onze relatie uit te breiden en te versterken. Ik kijk ernaar uit om nauw samen te werken met Sven Arne Tepl en zijn team, met Richard Egarr en Chloe Rooke om het brede profiel van een toegewijd, gepassioneerd en hoogwaardig orkest in en buiten Den Haag verder te verdiepen.”

Huidig chef-dirigent Anja Bihlmaier blijft in functie tot de zomer van 2025 en keert daarna terug als gastdirigent. Na vele successen te hebben behaald in de eerste seizoenen van het orkest op de nieuwe locatie Amare, kijkt ze uit naar een feestelijk laatste seizoen in 2024-2025, waarvan de details in het voorjaar van 2024 bekend worden gemaakt. Anja Bihlmaier: “Het was een eer en een genoegen om met het Residentie Orkest te mogen werken, met al het vertrouwen en de vreugde die we hebben gedeeld bij het maken van muziek. Ik kijk uit naar onze komende projecten dit en volgend seizoen en uiteraard daarna.” Als een van de meest gewilde dirigenten van haar generatie, blijft Anja een drukke agenda houden, zowel symfonisch als opera, met onder meer debuten dit seizoen bij het London Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Glyndebourne Opera, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse en Sydney Symphony.

Jun Märkl studeerde directie bij onder anderen Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein en Seiji Ozawa. Hij dirigeerde orkesten als de Münchner Philharmoniker, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Tonhalle Zürich en het Oslo Philharmonic. Hij is ook een gerenommeerd operadirigent en is een veelgevraagde gast bij gerenommeerde instellingen als de staatsopera’s van Wenen en Berlijn en de Metropolitan Opera in New York. Hij was chef-dirigent van onder meer het Orchester National de Lyon en het MDR-Sinfonieorchester Leipzig. Hij is momenteel Music Director van het National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Artistic Advisor van het Indianapolis Symphony en Principal Guest Conductor van het Oregon Symphony. In 2022 werd Jun Märkl genomineerd voor de Opus Klassik-award in de categorie ‘beste dirigent’. Hij heeft in de loop der jaren talloze (bekroonde) cd’s opgenomen. Het recente album met het Residentie Orkest met orkestmuziek van Saint-Saëns was cd van de week bij NPO Klassiek.

Chloe Rooke is een voormalig student van de Nationale Master Orkestdirectie (Conservatoria van Amsterdam en Den Haag in samenwerking met de Nederlandse symfonieorkesten). In 2023/24 was ze assistent-dirigent van het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, dat ze recentelijk dirigeerde in het Concertgebouw. Dit najaar stond ze ook voor London Sinfonietta, London Mozart Players en Orchestre National de Lille.

Residentie Orkest The Hague appoints Jun Märkl as its new chief conductor 

From the 2025/26 season, the German/Japanese conductor Jun Märkl will be the new chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest, succeeding Anja Bihlmaier. He has been a frequent visitor to the orchestra and principal guest conductor since the summer of 2021, his appointment seals the years of excellent collaboration. He will serve as chief conductor for at least four seasons, and meanwhile the long-standing relationship between the Residentie Orkest and principal guest conductor Richard Egarr will also be extended until 2029.

The team will be completed by the young British conductor Chloe Rooke in the newly created position of emerging artist in residence for three seasons from 2024. Known for her exceptional talent and her infectious enthusiasm towards both orchestra and audience, Chloe Rooke (who lives in The Hague) will be involved in all four pillars of the orchestra's activities: symphonic, education, talent development and social/outreach.

Current Chief Conductor Anja Bihlmaier will remain in post until the Summer of 2025 and will return thereafter as a guest conductor. Having already achieved numerous very good results in the orchestra’s first few seasons in their new venue Amare, she looks forward to a celebratory final season with the orchestra in 24/25, with details to be announced in the Spring.

I look forward to our upcoming projects together during my tenure, and indeed beyond.” As one of the most sought-after conductors of her generation, Bihlmaier continues to maintain a busy guest conducting schedule, both operatic and symphonic, including debuts this season with the London Philharmonic, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Glyndebourne Opera, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and Sydney Symphony.

In 2022, Jun Märkl was nominated for the Opus Klassik award in the 'best conductor' category. He has recorded countless (award-winning) Cd’s over the years, the latest album with Residentie Orkest with orchestral music by Saint-Saens has been Cd of the week with Dutch Classical Radio.

Chloe Rooke is a former student of the National Master Orchestral Conducting programme (Conservatories of Amsterdam and The Hague in collaboration with the Dutch symphony orchestras). 2023/24 she was Assistant Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic (whom she recently conducted at the Concertgebouw) and this Autumn has also conducted the London Sinfonietta, London Mozart Players and Orchestre National de Lille.
